[livejournal.com profile] tutordennis took me out to the Wax Museum at Fisherman's Wharf recently. It was awesome. They had an hysterical Jewish exhibit, which included the above maniacal rendition of Moses née Charlton Heston. Nearby was a sign saying, "The restrooms are located just past the Last Supper." Also, the disciples were in the wrong places around the table, leading me to wonder about all the excellent possibilities for wax museum practical jokes. Other blurry cameraphone photos are here.

I am really very glad that [livejournal.com profile] karenbynight and [livejournal.com profile] soof are in our lives. They're both so sweet to [livejournal.com profile] tutordennis, and are unfailingly respectful, thoughtful and kind. In short, I adore you guys!

My orthognathic surgery draws nigh. (Original post here.) It's been scheduled for 9 June. On one hand, it's that much closer to being over. The whole process (oral surgery, orthodontia, plus the operation itself) will take over a year by the time it's done, and it will be wonderful when it's finally all behind me. On the other hand, eek! They're going to take a bone saw to my skull and elongate my mandible with a bone graft! I'll be in the hospital for three days and off work for three weeks. Someone has to be with me around-the-clock for the first week home, I can't lift over 10 lbs. for four weeks, and I'll be on a liquid diet for six weeks. It will be another six months before they remove these accursed braces, which are seriously cramping my style on several fronts. On the plus side, I will most likely get lots of happy drugs. I'll find out more about the recovery process at my pre-op appointment on 30 May.

wow, I knew you were having jaw surgery, but I missed the initial post — that's almost exactly what I'm having done! (I'm also having some fake bone grafted into my top jaw because it's too small to hold the extra teeth they want to insert — I currently only have 22 teeth and my mouth is pretty full)

I don't need braces — at least, as far as I know, and my dentist printed out a sheet that details everything, every step of the way.

I'm not even going to be able to start mine for another 6 months or a year, I just can't afford it right now

*hugs*

Mine isn't a dental procedure, and apparently they need the braces to anchor my jaws during and after the surgery. The braces are not actually making my teeth more straight (they're all in their proper places already), but they have extra stuff on them (hooks, metal bands, and clamps) for the surgery.

Good luck with yours! Keep me posted.

i see

for mine, an oral surgeon is doing most of the work, but my dentist is in charge. she's the one making (ordering, really) the 10 fake teeth (when i first started having problems, my dentist at the time's solution was to remove teeth until they fit, so over 1/2 the molars. (we were also hoping it would help with my headaches. it did not) Plus, I just never grew adult pre-molars (but they baby ones fell out) and I have some baby teeth still) It's the lack of molars that's the problem - I do most chewing w/ my front teeth, causing irregular wear patterns and too much wear. Not a problem yet, but will be when I'm older. Plus, I guess it would be nice to be able to use an adult size gag and stuff :)

I'm expecting it to go well, when I had my wisdom teeth removed (and they were severely impacted under the other teeth) I had zero problems and zero pain. Though the idea of a graft scares me some.

for me, they are grafting in fake bone. Are they removing bone from you someplace, or are you getting the fake stuff?

Oh wow. Yeah, molars are kind of essential.

My wisdom teeth weren't a big deal either (I only had two wisdom teeth; never got them on top). I hope that bodes well for both our procedures!

Apparently, they're using bone from my thigh. I have tons of questions about that to ask at my pre-op visit next month.
